Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint conditions in the entire world. It is commonly associated with aging but is also frequently seen in cases of overuse of joints (knees, hips, hands, shoulders, spines, etc). Because of the anti-inflammatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells, physicians are able to minimize inflammation-related osteoarthritis pain. As part of a study about seven years ago, patients with severe OA were injected with mesenchymal stem cells and found they were able to walk longer without pain and climb a greater number of stairs. A follow-up study five years later revealed that improvements had decreased but showed that the knee with stem cells was still better than the baseline. There are many other studies like this which all support that stem cells are often beneficial against arthritic conditions.
